Etymology of the word "Conversion"

“Conversion”. It’s a standard industry term, that’s used to describe a scenario of a website visitor becoming a customer. “We converted him!” But let’s think about that word for a moment. It’s very similar to “convince” and the action is accurate as well, but that word has too much “push/pull” in it, so it’s not used.

Why not “transformation”? “Our Adwords campaign has a 5% transformation rate.” I think the reason that phrase doesn’t stick is because it’s too holistic, too friendly, too slow.

A transformation is something that a person undergoes from the inside out; a conversion is eventually an internal process, but it’s something that starts from the outside.

Hah, transformation, I like it. How about “transfiguration”? Or even further with the religion theme, “ascension”? Personally, increasing “churn” makes the religious imagery used in marketing at least out of date, maybe out of touch.

“advancement” or “development” make a lot more sense to me than conversion. A campaign could have a 5% advancement rate. Bill develops into a customer. I’m even inclined to fulfillment, or better yet cut to the quick, SUCCESS rate. Just my thoughts…

i’m not too into the “success” rate because I think it’s a term that misleads marketers and business owners into the “wham bam thank you ma’am” aproach to marketing. sure it may make QUICK MONEY but it doesn’t make LONG TERM money. I more prefer what you wrote the “advancement” or “development” rate… it hints at an ongoing, continuing process.

I like your recent post about “trick photography” btw – did you take those?

Good point. No, I didn’t take them, just a few I thought were cool.

Nice blog, keep it up. I should start posting again…
