It’s a biological imperative to continue to live, to desire to live. At the most root level, the purpose of life IS, simply, to live. Our bodies are created with the core purpose of: “stay alive, avoid death.”
And for this reason, the end of life is so mind bending. Because suddenly, for someone like my grandfather, who is 89 and nearing the end of his fight with Parkinson’s, the decision of “I’m ready, I’ve had enough, I’m letting go” is something that can be made intellectually, it can be made spiritually, it can be made emotionally… But the body itself, even as it deteriorates and wears down, the body will never actually ‘agree’ with the decision.
